Digital Doubles

A wild wind blew through my neighbor’s yard, causing a very long piece of packing plastic to take to the sky and dance.  Naturally, I shot many photos of the performance. Later, I pulled the images into Photoshop and positioned them one atop the other to create the image below. Then, I sampled areas of the image that I found pleasing.

My world is a wonder of visual candy and foreboding shadow shapes vying every waking moment for my full attention.

  1. I remember that American Beauty scene…
Your dancing plastic photos are fantastic, especially the layers.Your series makes me smile. I can just get that feeling of you working away!

  2. Aw Elena, who would have ever thought that out of the ordinary comes the extraordinary! Your artistry and creativity at it’s highest. I am always fascinated by the artist mind and eyes – your visions heighten the viewers senses. Love this one!

  3. What a lovely idea. The layering is very fabric- like, silky even. The landscape “Paused”…?

I have seen plastic dancing in the wind at times and find it does have a sort of beauty along with suggestions of a sad legacy, which makes these quite meaningful.

    1. Karen, thank you. A beautiful sentiment. And yes, the quality of fabric paused never fails to speak to me. And yes, the plastic and fabric share a melancholy beauty. Just as Marcelo (below) reminded me. You’ve also helped me fully appreciate why this moves me so, and how elusive the capture remains.

  4. Beautiful.
It calls to mind the bag scene from the film American Beauty.

“”Do you want to see the most beautiful thing I ever filmed? It was one of those days when it’s a minute away from snowing. And there’s this electricity in the air, you can almost hear it, right? And this bag was just… dancing with me … like a little kid begging me to play with it. For fifteen minutes. That’s the day I realized that there was this entire life behind things, and this incredibly benevolent force that wanted me to know there was no reason to be afraid. Ever. Video is a poor excuse, I know. But it helps me remember … I need to remember…

Sometimes there’s so much beauty in the world … I feel like I can’t take it… and my heart is just going to cave in.”

Sorry for the long post 🙂

    1. Thank you Marcelo! I do recall this moment, and it’s so well done. It touches me deeply. I suppose the plastic I found tapped into what I had stored but forgotten about this scene. I remember thinking that I should video tape the plastic dance, and tried, but it fell short of something I could not recall. Now I know why. Thank you:)
