Waking

bwakey copy

12″x12″ oil on canvas

I’ve been weighing thicker and looser oil painting technique against thinner and more exacting.  The former seems to push my color intensity to match the density of the paint. Despite the thick paint, I’ve glazed in places, joining a technique I’ve used only with thin layers, with a near impasto. A wake-up for my senses, or at least a new passage and practice.

My world is a wonder of visual candy and foreboding shadow shapes vying every waking moment for my full attention.

  1. Adding my agreement to all below – this is so rich and intense – wish I could see the colours in real life.. Brilliantly captured, keep going! 🙂

  2. An absolutely expressive and gorgeous painting. I recognize that morning light that pokes you in the eye upon waking…
Your experimentation and material play looks fantastic – I’d love to see it in person!

  3. What a pleasure to experiment and renew oneself. Apparently even the masters like to do so! I’m impressed. Even though I have to admit I hardly know what it’s like to wake up, myself, since I only ever do that verrrrry slowly and reluctantly. 😉 Another lovely piece! 😀

  4. This is exquisite Elena. You’ve captured so much detail in such a free style. Look at the slightly swollen lips we have upon waking and the finger under the eyelashes. You are an inspiration to me….

  5. Your talent is amazing 🙂 And this along with your other portraits makes me now seriously consider trying to paint with oils. It would be a first, but I’m up for trying something new with my art too. Have a great weekend, Elena.

  6. Love how you are always trying new things…such inspiration you are!! Love the lighting on her hand…another one of your amazing portraits! I so enjoy your creations!

  7. Elena I invariably enjoy your portraits, you are a fine portrait painter, but it is just not possible to experience the subtlieties of textures you describe without being in the presence of the actual painting.

  8. you haven’t seen me, waking up in the morning! 🙂

your artistic skills are so good…. capturing emotions so well , always finding good work here
    I enjoy it, Elena!

  9. Your portraits are simply amazing, this size is incredible as a close-up. This series in particular, the ability to bring a relaxed young person and their raw emotions to the canvas to me, speaks to your incredible skill and talent. Love your new technique yes, you have mastered the heavy texture with beautiful rich colors. I love this one Elena ~

  10. Just beautiful. The rich color gives stunning depth and contrast. Very alive. All of which adds to the emotional punch. I admire your bold closeups. Making the image that tight works very well with the style.
