Blood and Vapor:The Crossing

bboatchildren copySome may remember a series I’ve been struggling with called “Blood and Vapor”.*   Suffice it to say, I continue to struggle with four paintings in this series that I am working simultaneously. Each touches upon  a different aspect of the theme. This one is on the periphery and explores our ties to the inevitable crossing between life and death.

“Blood And Vapor”:   Who lingers within you?   Have you ever felt an ancestral presence?  The inescapable tie of family:hundreds of individuals, yesterday and today, here and gone.  A powerful resonance or inconspicuous vapor?

Not as gloomy as it appears, I chose the bird metaphor to offer affinity with all living things.  This is the last (perhaps) of the smaller works. I’m now challenging myself with very large paintings with a less specific focus than the small pieces.  So far, I’ve experienced lots of trial and error attempts with them. I may finally be gaining on them:)

I will not whine again about photographing shiny oil work, but this painting is so much stronger in person.  On the flip side,  the WP snow is perfect!

I’ve packed this little painting with symbolism.  Another very personal piece.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to play out the more obvious notions “haunting” this project to hopefully make way for more comprehensive pieces. While only addressing one aspect of my premise, this piece strikes a personal cord for me.

I’ll be posting two more “Blood and Vapor” visual investigations this week.

Blood and Vapor Series Sketch

Pastel Pencil 8″x10″   Although I enjoyed making this sketch, I wasn’t really going anywhere.   It’s too literal, so I’m leaving it behind.  I’m working on lots of other solutions. So far, not much is really hitting the mark for the series*.

A new series, “Blood And Vapor”.

Who lingers within you?   Have you ever felt an ancestral presence?  The inescapable tie of family:hundreds of individuals, yesterday and today, here and gone.  A powerful resonance or inconspicuous vapor?

I’ll be wrestling with a visual expression, with varied materials and modes of expression to come close to addressing these questions.

I’m experimenting wildly so many of the pieces I’ve made thus far don’t really “work”.  Some approach the mark for me, and others are quite disappointing.  I’ll be sharing them all with you as I explore.

This piece is watercolor, 22″x30″, with a burnt sienna oil glaze in selected portions.
